How to Use Alternate Font Characters

Many modern and professional fonts include alternate characters (also called glyphs) such as ligatures, swashes, fractions, ornaments, or stylistic alternates. These characters give you more design flexibility and help you create typography that feels unique and polished. Below are the main methods for accessing and using them in your design software.

1. Using the Glyphs Panel

This is the most reliable method, especially for creative fonts with decorative alternates, swashes, and ligatures.

Steps:

  1. Open the Glyphs Panel

  • In your software (Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign), go to Window > Type > Glyphs.

  • Select a Font

    • Choose the font you want from the dropdown menu inside the Glyphs panel.

  • Browse Available Characters

    • Scroll through the panel to see all the glyphs.

  • Characters with a small triangle in the corner indicate they have alternates. Click and hold to view them.

  • Insert the Glyph

    • Place the text cursor in your document.

  • Double-click the glyph in the panel (or click and press “Insert”). The character will appear at your cursor’s position.

  • Tip: Use the “Show” dropdown in the Glyphs panel to filter results, such as “Alternates for Current Selection,” so you only see alternates for the character you’re editing.

    2. Using Stylistic Alternates in Type Settings

Some applications (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Microsoft Word) allow you to apply alternates directly through the Character or Type panel without opening the Glyphs panel.

    Steps:

    1. Highlight a Letter that has alternates available.

  • Open the Character/Type Settings.

    • Look for options like Stylistic Alternates, Contextual Alternates, or Ligatures.

  • Apply the Alternate.

    • Clicking the option automatically replaces the selected character with its stylistic version.

Tip: This is faster than manually inserting glyphs and ensures consistency when you want a particular alternate style across a whole block of text.

    3. Using Keyboard Shortcuts

When a Glyphs panel is not available or you need quick access to standard alternates, keyboard shortcuts and Unicode codes can help.

    Steps:

    1. Unicode Input (Windows): Hold down the ALT key and type the four-digit Unicode number on the numeric keypad. Example: ALT + 0169 for ©.

  • Alt Gr / Right ALT (Windows & European keyboards): Use Alt Gr + another key to access alternate characters (e.g., Alt Gr + E = €).

  • Option Key (Mac): Use Option + Key combinations to type alternate characters (e.g., Option + 2 = ™).

  • Note: This method works best for common symbols or language-specific characters, not for decorative swashes or ligatures.

    4. Using Online Resources

If your software does not include a Glyphs panel (e.g., Canva, Figma, or some free editors), you can still access alternates by copying them from online resources.

    Steps:

    1. Search Online for the alternate character or Unicode symbol.

  • Copy and Paste it into your document.

  • Replace the Original Character by pasting the glyph in its place.

  • Tip: Some font foundries provide “character maps” or PDF guides that show all available alternates in a font. Always check the font documentation for easier access.

    Conclusion

Using alternate font characters allows you to move beyond standard typography and take full advantage of the design features built into professional fonts. Whether you’re inserting glyphs through the Glyphs panel, applying stylistic alternates in type settings, using keyboard shortcuts, or relying on online resources, these tools open up new creative possibilities.

By combining these methods, you can create text that feels more customized, expressive, and visually engaging—perfect for branding, logos, invitations, or editorial design.
